FAST FACTS:

--Tiwanaku was founded in approximately 200 BC

--Between 600AD and 800AD it became a regional power

--The state collapsed in 1000AD

--It was an agriculturally-based

--There were a number of similar villages in the area

--They used raised field farming method

--At its height the population might have been up to 40000

--The city covered up to 5 square kilometres

--Stone weighting up to 100 tons were used in construction of the city

--Religion was important. One of their sacred stories is about VIRACOCHA, the creator and destroyer of worlds. He created people.

--The presents ruins have been pillaged for construction and have suffered because of bad reconstruction.

--The Gateway of the Sun is not in its original location ( it now stands in the Kalasasaya)

--Tiwanaku is a UNESCO world heritage site administered by the Bolivian government.
