The Feudal System of government relied on the extreme use of absolute power. The king was the most important person. He decided all important matters in his land. His lords received their power from the king and in return had to serve him. The lords had control over small sections of land within the kingdom. Theses lords were in turn served by lesser lords who ruled over smaller parcels of land. Serving these lords were knights, soldiers, servants, peasants and serfs.

The king, never trusting his lords, always kept the best land for himself. This land would produce enough income for the king to maintain a large army to ensure his word was law.
