Scientific name: Ursus maritimus

Location: Canada, Greenland, Norway, Russia and USA

Size: up to 2.4m long and weigh up to 600kg

Life Span: between 20 and 30 years

Current Status: endangered due to hunting and environmental factors

Habitat: the annual ice adjacent to the shorelines of the continents and archipelagos throughout the circumpolar Arctic.

Fast facts:

  • eats grass, kelp, berries and seals
  • they don't have a problem with the cold, their problem is becoming overheated, especially when they run
  • they use their powerful sense of smell locate breathing holes in the ice
  • they can wait hours or even days for a seal to surface
  • powerful swimmers
  • run up to 40kpm for short bursts
  • they don't drink water.
  • they are biggest carnivores on land
  • their fur is water-repellent
