Common name: Arctic fox, white fox, polar fox or snow fox.

Scientific name: Alopex lagopus

Four subspecies of Arctic Fox are:

Bering Islands arctic fox, Vulpes lagopus beringensis
Iceland Arctic fox, Vulpes lagopus fuliginosus
Pribilof Islands arctic fox, Vulpes lagopus pribilofensis
Greenland arctic fox, Vulpes lagopus foragorapusis

Location:throughout the entire Arctic

Size: length from 80 to 110 cm for males and 71 to 85 cm for females.It stands up to 30 cm high.

Weight:  3 to 9 kg for males and 1.5 to 3 kg for females.

Life Span: 3 years.

Current Status: endangered populations in some areas of the Arctic.

Habitat: All areas of the Arctic

Fast Fact:

  • eats small animals, seal pups, berries, fish, birds and eggs.
  • will bury food it cannot eat.
