The seven wonders of the ancient world have been listed as:

 


THE GREAT PYRAMID OF GIZA
Location: city of Giza, now part of Cairo, Egypt

  • 145.75 m high

  • 229 m length

  • 2,300,000 blocks of stone

  • served as a King's burial chamber


THE HANGING GARDENS OF BABYLON
Location:
on the bank of the River Euphrates, 50 km south of present day Baghdad

  • built by Nebuchadnezzar II sometime between 604-562 BC

  • consisted of terraced gardens


THE STATUE OF ZEUS
Location: Olympia, on the west coast of Greece, approx 150 km west of Athens

  • designed by Libon

  • built around 450 BC


THE TEMPLE OF ARTEMIS AT EPHESUS
Location: Ephesus near the town of Selcuk, Turkey

  • designed by the Greek architect Chersiphron

  • size 80 m  by 130 m

  • columns were 20 m  high

  • there were 127 columns

  • it was built around 550 BC for the Goddess Artemis

  • it was destroyed and rebuilt at least three times



THE MAUSOLEUM AT HALICARNASSUS
Location: it was built in the city of Bodrum, Turkey

  • Built by the queen of king Mausollos of Caria, queen Artemisia

  • it was about 40 m  by 30 m and 45 m high

  • it had a statue of a chariot at the top

  • completed around 350 BC

  • Some art work from the building is in the Mausoleum Room at the British Museum


THE COLOSSUS OF RHODES
Location: it was built at the entrance to Rhodes harbour, Greece

  • designed by Chares of Lindos

  • it was built to honor the god Helios

  • finished in 282 BC

  • it was about 33 m  tall


THE LIGHTHOUSE OF ALEXANDRIA
Location: the city of Alexandria on the Egyptian coast

  • it was built approx 270BC

  • the designer was Sostrates of Knidos

  • a statue of Poseidon was on the top of the building

  • it was built in three stages

  • the lowest stage was 55.9m high

  • the next stage was 27.45m high

  • the top stage was 7.3m high
